Geomatics lab

PRESENTATION OF THE GEOMAP

The Laboratory of Applied Geomatics and Environment (LAGEOMAPPE) is a support structure for teaching and research of the Regional Post-Graduate School of Integrated Management of Tropical Forests and Lands (ERAIFT). Created since 2001, LAGEOMAPPE pursues three fundamental missions: support to teaching, research and service to the community.

  1. On the pedagogical level, this laboratory constitutes an important support for the teachings related to the chairs of  Optical Remote Sensing and Digital Mapping as well as that of RADAR Remote Sensing, Complementary Geodesy and GIS  Informatics at the level of Diploma of Higher Specialized Studies (equivalent of Master 2).
  2. On the scientific level, the laboratory supports students and researchers in their research work on the spatial modeling aspects of their studies.
  3. Regarding the service to the society, LAGEOMAPPE is the main seat of the continuous trainings organized by the school in the fields of applied geomatics (GIS, remote sensing, cartography, use of GPS, data base). At the moment we have just set up a "GIS Certificate" which lasts 16 weeks. In addition to the GIS certificate, the laboratory also organizes a ten-day "GIS Certificate".

Our area of expertise is spatial modeling including:

  • Remote sensing: processing of optical and RADAR satellite images;
  • Geographic Information Systems;
  • Cartography;
  • Databases;
  • WEBGIS and WEBMAPPING, etc..

The software packages commonly used in this laboratory are :

  • ENVI: Remote sensing (image processing);
  • PolSARPRO: RADAR Remote Sensing (Synthetic Aperture Radar Data Processing);
  • MAPREADY;
  • QGIS: Open source GIS;
  • ARCGIS: proprietary GIS; - POSTGRESQL : Database; - ACCESS: Database.

ORGANIZED TRAININGS

LAGEOMAPPE currently offers two products in the form of continuing education in Geographic Information System. It is an introductory training in GIS in ten days called "GIS BREVET" and a four-month course in Geographic Information System called "GIS CERTIFICATE".

This training offer guarantees a transfer of competence in terms of know-how to your teams by allowing them to benefit from our experience and our expertise in several fields of geomatics, dealing mainly with business and practical aspects.

Our training offer constitutes a complete curriculum in the acquisition of skills for the mastery of techniques and know-how for the exploitation of geographical information according to three axes: the know-how, the tools and the techniques of implementation of GIS type applications (Geographical Information Systems).

Our trainers are ready to intervene in the development and follow-up of our clients' projects. They have the skills that allow them to listen to you to analyze your needs and develop with you training plans tailored to your expectations and your missions within your organization. In addition, the trainer accompanies you throughout your training project, from the analysis of your needs to the validation of your knowledge. A theoretical and practical approach constitutes each of our trainings, which allows you to better understand and immediately put into practice the concepts studied.

Approach to training applicants

Our quality approach to our clients consists of :

  • Analyzing and identifying your needs;
  • Develop a training plan adapted to the objectives and participants;
  • Organize the training;
  • Validate the acquired knowledge;
  • Providing clear and practical training materials.

The trainings are organized in the ERAIFT facilities located on the campus of the University of Kinshasa. On your request, the trainings can be held in your premises.

TEN-DAY INTERNSHIP IN SIG

1 Objectives

The main objective of this program is to present Geographic Information Systems and their applications in the field of environment (natural resources management, transportation, land use planning, risk management, agriculture, energy, noise, maritime and river navigation, ...).

Specifically, it will be necessary to present:

  • the nature of GIS;
  • their specificities;
  • their utilities;
  • their main functions;
  • their fields of application;
  • the principles, tools and techniques of design and implementation.

2 Targeted skills

 At the end of this training, the trainee will be able to carry out a simple GIS project (inventory). To do so, he/she will first have to be able to enter GIS data, especially those collected with a GPS receiver. He/she will then have to be able to update the GIS he/she has created. He will finally be able to formulate his concerns for a help in the realization and the management of the realized GIS.

3 Program and contents

 During this training, theoretical presentations, examples and practical work on computers will be alternated. These practical works will be realized with the help of GIS tools to choose between QGIS 1.7 1.8 (free) and ArcGIS 9.X, 10.X or MapINFO 7.X, 8.X, 9.X, 10.X (proprietary). However, if a structure is interested in more than one software, we are ready to find a compromise to satisfy it.

The minimum content will be based on the following concepts :

  • Geographic Information
  • What this notion is;
  • How we model geographic information.
  • Exemples of GIS
  • Areas of use - Demonstrations or presentations of GIS operations;
  • Contextual elements: market and actors.
  • Geographic data types and manipulation
  • Structuring of vector data;
  • Concept of layers;
  • Raster data. Sources, types and properties;
  • Integration of statistical files or other tabular data for use in a GIS.
  • Basics of cartographic production
  • Presentation of the French cartographic projections;
  • Principles of cartography (elements of layout and major families of maps).
  • Data analysis
  • Simple spatial analysis;
  • Simple queries.

4 Target audience

 This course is intended for technicians from companies, non-governmental organizations and administrations whose activities require or involve spatial information.

It may also be of interest to decision-makers and territory managers who need to know what benefits mapping in conjunction with databases can have on their performance. Finally, this training may be of interest to study managers or project managers who must map study results.

5 Prerequisites

  • Be familiar with computers,
  • Basic knowledge of geography.
6 Duration : 10 days

7 Maximum number of participants per session: 15 peopl

8 Cost to be discussed on a case by case basis.
FOUR-MONTH INTERNSHIP IN SIG
INTERNSHIP IN TELEDETECTION

In addition to the three training courses mentioned above, we offer "à la carte" training, i.e. on demand. We are able to organize training according to the place, the duration as well as the contents which interests you in the field of the geomatics: GIS, Remote sensing, Cartography, use of the GPS.

IV. MAPPING AND CONSULTING SERVICES

In addition to training and research support, LAGEOMAPPE provides cartographic services to interested organizations and structures. These services mainly concern spatial modeling by using geomatic tools. It is the development of thematic maps, the design and implementation of geographic information systems and the design and implementation of conventional databases.

Also, the GEOMAPPE offers its advice on issues related to the optimal use of geographical space including spatial analysis.
